Azwana Mohd Hassan has been working tirelessly for many years to care for the welfare of children and adolescents with mental and cognitive disorders such as autism, ADHD and dyslexia.
“I am a mother of an autistic child who received treatment at Hospital Permai at the age of five. He’s seventeen now. Back then, things were different. Parents had a lack of understanding of autism. They often assumed that if their child needs to be admitted to Permai, it means that they are mentally retarded, but it’s not like that,” said Azwana.
Azwana lends her support and guidance to affected families on ways to care for children with special needs. As a parent herself, the experience she gained allows her to create awareness for children with mental disabilities through various activities and courses for parents to participate in.
“When I started joining the classes and activities organised by the hospital, I became enthusiastic because it taught me what I need to know about being a parent to a child with special needs. Later, I began joining more parent groups to gain additional knowledge,” said Azwana.
She explained that, over the years, younger and inexperienced parents often seek her help and advice and she would guide and point them in the right direction. Azwana believes that the community of parents must be welcoming and understanding in order for all children to benefit and have a fulfilling life.
“I admit it’s not easy, the stress is imaginable but because of love and passion as a parent, you would go to the ends of the earth for your child. By providing moral support and knowledge to other parents, we can slowly convince parents that their child is a gift and not a burden and that there is help when you need it,” shared Azwana.
