Jenny Tan Pei Cheng

She courageously but very carefully climbed over a gate with pointy sharp rods on top. The gate was secured by a rusty chain, protecting the house from potential invaders. But Jenny had to get inside. She had received multiple calls from the public, and she had to rescue the victims that were kept in distress behind the gate she was jumping over.

About 8 dogs and 7 cats were found locked inside the house that day. Jenny took a video to capture the inside of the unoccupied empty terrace house: a mess of urine, faeces, plastic bags, and a couple of dead animals. From the video, Jenny was heard grunting in disgust over the smell. Imagine how the animals were stuck in that messy situation for more than three months.

She found dogs on the ground floor while the cats were in the rooms upstairs. They seemed relieved to see Jenny, the cats meowing and dogs wagging their tails: as if they knew they were going to be rescued. Sadly, some animals lay dead in the toilet; four cats, with more dead cats near the window, and one right at the entrance of the house, as if it was trying to escape before passing away. Jenny made a police report and saved the remaining animals and sent them to the veterinarian for check-ups while the rest were adopted by screened individuals.

As a young girl, Jenny was always helping homeless dogs and cats. Now as a grown-up, she starts her day by sending her children to school and then feeding stray dogs and finding them homes to be adopted in. She often teaches her children the importance of loving animals. Her children are following their mother’s footsteps, understanding that animals have the right to live as well.

Jenny has saved over 80 dogs, all of them now housed somewhere away from neighbourhoods where they could be considered a nuisance and are potentially at risk of being culled. Animals are not able to voice out their problems, they wait for humans to help them out. Jenny tries to be a voice for the animals by giving a message to the public that stray cats and dogs do not deserve to be punished.

Jenny wishes for local authorities to pay more attention to stray animals and give them a better environment to live in.
