Classical music is commonly seen as a very exclusive form of indulgence, but Orkestra Darul Takzim de-mystifies that notion. Officially formed in 2015, it serves as a platform to train and cultivate budding classical musicians from a tender age, regardless of their social status or financial background.
“It all started when my three children picked up the violin, and over time we realised there are not many places or groups that supported this. They managed to influence their friends, slowly teaching them how to play the violin and before we knew it, their school (Bandar Baru Uda) showed much interest to make it into a school activity,” said Norsila.
Norsila believes that when children have friends with similar interests, it’s easier for them to grow, be motivated and keep their interests alive. She added that, her children would teach their friends for free in order to give others company and show them the world of classical music.
Orkestra Darul Takzim operates like many other music schools. Students are taught the basics of music from sight-reading, music drills as well as group practice sessions that are open to any child, as long as they are willing to learn to appreciate classical music. As they progress, these students will perform at in-house recitals to hone their skills before joining the main orchestra group.
“When my children started, we didn’t have much guidance besides what their teacher taught and classes like these are not affordable for many. Therefore, when we started this movement, we wanted to create a fun and welcoming environment and change any misconception to make it an inclusive and holistic space,” she added.
