Soka Gakkai means “Value-Creation Society”, and it essentially promotes education, peace, and culture. Established as a national organisation in 1984, Soka Gakkai has over 5,000 members and runs activities where youths can get actively involved in contributing to communities nationwide.
Man and nature must co-exist in harmony. This is Soka Gakkai‘s philosophy and its values are emphasised to all members: to help people, to contribute to the community, nation, and for world peace. Every two years, Soka Gakkai Malaysia – Johor branch holds a Run for Peace event. In 2019, they had over 20,000 participants who registered for the run from different parts of Johor. They believe in fostering youths to create value in every day lives and to be good citizens of the nation.
Winning IMSHA gave the organisation’s members more encouragement in carrying out their work as their efforts were recognised. They also won the Anugerah Masyarakat Penyayang Negeri Johor and Anugerah Penyayang Peringkat Johor in previous years.
Tan Kiang Howe, the former Johor branch chairman and current representative in Community Service Group, shares his satisfaction of witnessing the rise of young people participating in the activities. He is also happy to see people from the older generation living joyfully and continuing to create value in their lives. He has seen volunteers from outside the city participating in relief work for flood victims and, to him, it is a humbling privilege to be able to serve victims of natural disasters.
Soka Gakkai Malaysia is also active in cultural activities with the government. For the past 30 years, they have participated in National Day programmes and collaborated with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, and other agencies and communities.
They also hold yearly community services such as blood donations and health talks.
